Daily Prompt: Three-Tenths
by michelle w. on August 17, 2013

Scribble down the first ten words that come to mind. Pick three of them. There’s your post title. Now write!

Cool Dry Thirst

It was an unusually cool day in August. Brenda decided the cool day was ideal for walking. She had left her home around 9:00 a.m., taking only one bottle of water with her.
Brenda walked the main roads for awhile, cut through the town’s park, and entered the woody area on the other side of the park. She had walked in these woods before, but it had been several years ago.
She reveled in the peace of nature, and became aware of the sounds and smells. They sent her back in time; when life seemed slower and less stressful. Brenda sat on a large root of an oak tree. She leaned back, resting her back against the tree, and soon became lost in nostalgia. She even dozed a little.
When Brenda forced herself back into real time, her throat felt cool and dry. She looked down at her bottle of water, only to find it empty. She stood up and tried to remember which way she had come. Brenda thought some of her surroundings looked familiar and started walking the way she thought she had come.
She had not gone very far, when the trees started getting closer together, making the woods look thicker than before. Brenda moaned. What was she going to do now? Lost and stranded in the thick of woods, without food or water, and no idea of which way to go.
As her inner thoughts slowed, Brenda’s ears took over. “Listen, listen, listen,” they said. Brenda heard the bubbling of water. She quickly started toward the sound, and to her wonder and delight, came upon a little stream of water. It looked clean. Brenda cupped her hands and washed her face, neck, arms, and hands. The little stream was flowing to her right, so she moved a bit to her left to catch the clean water. Again, she cupped her hands and brought the cool water to her mouth to quinch her dry throat and her thirst.
She didn’t want to drink too much, in case it was contaminated. She placed her empty bottle of water into the little stream to refill it. She would sip on it, as needed, until she found her way back to the park.
Brenda turned and started back the way she had come. It seemed easy, this time, to spot familiar areas. She reached the park, as the sun was beginning to set. Families were preparing to leave the park. Brenda didn’t want to bother strangers to take her home and she didn’t want to walk the darkened streets that led to her home.
She heard someone calling her name. Brenda looked back to see her friend, Tiffany, walking toward her with her 5-year-old daughter clinging to her hand.
“Hi! It is you. I wasn’t sure but had to find out. I’ve never seen you at the park before,” Tiffany said.
“Well, I thought this was a good day for a walk, but got a little lost in the woods. It took me awhile to make it back to the park,” I replied.
“Did you park your car here?” Tiffany asked while looking over the parking lot to find Brenda’s car.
“No. I walked from my home this morning.”
“You must be very tired. Tania and I were just heading out to get a pizza. Would you like to join us?”
“Yes. I would appreciate that.”
“Well let’s get going,” Tiffany said and grabbed Brenda’s hand.
Off they walked toward Tiffany’s car, with Tiffany holding Brenda’s hand in one of hers and her young daughter, Tania’s hand in the other.
That’s what friends are for.
